After posting a series of tweets regarding illegal uploaders, Lezhin has posted an official apology for their unprofessional tweets. There was also a tweet from them announcing that some of their popular comics will go on hiatus indefinitely but I couldn’t find it in their page anymore. Most likely the backlash have caused them to backtrack on their statements and offered an apology instead.
While I understand the need to compensate the authors well, I also believe it’s not fair to generalize everyone as viewers of illegal sites and if indeed they threatened the suspension of their comics, that also means that they’re punishing legal viewers as well.
So I’m happy to see this announcement from Lezhin. Hopefully, they can address piracy and illegal uploads without trying to hurt those that support them in the future. Because this kind of business strategy is simply weird and downright suicidal. Go after the illegal uploaders not your readers.
Here’s the screenshot for the official apology:
Personally, there are many ways to handle piracy without aggravating your fans and showing an ugly personality in social medial. I’m just glad that they have the tact and the decency to apologize all things considered.
What do you think? Did Lezhin handle this issue well? What could they have done better in the future?
